Trains, buses and commercial vehicles contain several devices which may contain data that may be useful in a collision investigation and reconstruction. Such systems may include:
- In-vehicle video systems
- Event Data Recorders (EDR’s)
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
- Satellite Communication Systems (GPS)
- Collision Avoidance Systems
- Engine Control Modules (ECM’s)
- Navigation Systems
- Data Loggers
- Tachographs
The type of data varies based on vehicle make, model and year of that specific device. Information may include a video image, vehicle speed, vehicle braking data, vehicle throttle data, vehicle engine speed, maximum and governed speed, fault code data, diagnostic data, hard braking data, warnings, histogram data and messages. Please see chapters 18 and 19 in the Northwestern University Traffic Crash Reconstruction textbook for more detailed information about vehicle EDR's.
